Further advice on school locations

Where are boarding schools located?

The majority of boarding schools are located outside of city centres to enable their larger campuses. On our map we do not differentiate between full board, flexi board and weekly board. Also we do not show the percentage of pupils boarding. Some boarding schools have more than 90% boarders whereas others may have less than 10%. Contact us to discuss your requirements by phoning +44 1622 813870.

How to choose a school by curriculum

There are numerous different curriculums, particularly as you approach 16 – A Levels, International Baccalaureate, Pre-U, BTECs and Foundation Programmes – and some schools may offer 2 or 3 of these. You can find A Level schools anywhere, but for the others contact us for a free eGuide and advice on +44 1622 813870.

What about Special Educational Needs?

Many private schools will take milder forms of SENs like dyslexia, but for severe SENs you may need a special school and there are so few you may need to choose a boarding school. We carry lists of all types of SEN schools – so contact us on +44 1622 813870.

How far should my child travel to school?

Private schools do not have catchment areas like state schools do. It is not a matter of how far away the school is situated but more a question of how long the “school run” takes. If you live in congested areas like London, you don’t want to commute any more than 3 to 5 miles from the school - preferably less. In countryside 10 miles can be acceptable . Larger schools will often run their own coach services. It’s easy to check with the school, but be aware they can be expensive

Supposing you are relocating?

Many parents ask us to find the school first after which they which they will find their house.
This is usually a straightforward problem to solve as we have a lot of experience of good housing areas. If a client prefers we can introduce you to an experienced home relocation consultant.

What are typical school hours for a day school?

These vary by the age range of the school, with prep schools finishing much earlier than senior schools. Near to busy cities, schools will often run breakfast clubs allowing working parents to drop their children at school between 7:30 to 8:00 am on their way to work.

Factors other than location

The precise location of a school near to a child’s home tends to be much more important for ages up to 11 when children still need to be accompanied and / or driven to school. Post 11 a lot of other factors become more important such as academic success, music, sports, drama, special curriculums.
